Why does a picture agency build model boats?
We are often being asked this question. The answer is passion. Passion for the ocean, the water and the sailing. The idea for the picture agency stockmaritime was born in 2004. In 2005 the stockmaritime founder and owner of the advertising agency (GentCom GmbH) Hans Genthe spotted the Kyosho model Fortune, which today is our AC60, at the hanseboot in Hamburg. He looked at its hull shape and thought: „It looks fast. Just the right toy for me and my son to sail matchraces in the harbour.“ But the sails of the series model did not meet the expectations of the active race sailor, so two new sets of sails were created on the agency's printer that weekend. With the agency's corporate design, of course. The logical second step was to use these boats and sails for promotion of the young picture agency. The next step was the serial production of the small yachts and this service was offered to companies.
Cooperations with America's Cup Teams and an inquiry by the clothing manufacturer HUGO BOSS to develop a model of an OPEN 60 followed.
The focus for the BOSS model was on the sailing performance of the miniature yacht,
which meant that the hull shape could not be transfered 1:1, but hat to be modified.
Hans Genthe was enthusiastic being able to finally fulfill on a small scale his original dream to become a yacht designer.
Even the once started boat building studies suddenly made sense. The construction issue was now closed, but no supplier could meet the requested hull weight and small order quantities. Thus the idea for a production site was born. In 2007 we moved from the small but chic agency's office in the Dockenhuder Strasse to the convenient, large office space in the Ruhrstrasse in Hamburg. 200qm of the building could be used to create a model boat factory and the first order for the VOLVO OCEAN RACE was professionally done at the new site. Our model are real small racing machines. They are no 1:1 copies of some big boats, but transfer the big boats' sailing characteristics to a small scale. Our models shall convey the fascination of sailing. Many videos on our website and on YouTube show the great sailing performance of the miniature racers. Models in light winds, during a race, in a storm, in the surf, … It's not just our passion, but we are probably a bit crazy, too. Today you can purchase many fast boats from us, America´s Cupper, Open 60, Volvo Open 70, TP 52, R46 and test, how the the big models sail. But these boats were initially built because of inquiries from regatta sponsors or organisers, not because the many international customers want to buy these models. On the basis of suggestions from the „Go for Quality“ initiative 2011 the 3x1 was developed, hopefully the best model boat of the world. It's really „Made in Germany“. We are especially proud, that we can produce the boat at a competitive price in Hamburg. You can call us or send an e-mail to get advice and support. Because we want you to come back and sail with (and against) us. Today we have a fixed team of 5 employees and 2-3 temporary helpers, who work on the small dreams for the big sailors all over the world. With passion.

A quick model boat guide
Stand: 30.11.2011.People have asked on Facebook about it, so we now provide a quick model boat guide to help with your decision. Everyone's got their preferences, so Hans Genthe, founder of stockmaritime, only gives his SUBJECTIVE view on the different model types. As from 30.11.2011. Hans Genthe: "First our four top sellers:
1. The best in price and sailing performance is the AC60. I think, it's the most sold model sailing boat from all manufacturers (probably even worldwide). But in its original version it tends to sink easily, if the hatches are not properly sealed. We offer lots of tuning equipment for the problems of this series. Starting at 200-250 EUR for the ship model including the tuning, the yacht can be sailed well. With the full tuning you can also sail with it in the surf in 7 beaufort at Anholt in the Kattegat without causing any breakage. But with this advanced equipment, you will have to spent already 400 EUR...“
2. The TP52/R46 is a real good model boat, especially for the size of 65cm (25.59''). Because of the pretty long construction time and the high labour costs this model is more expensive than the 3x1. The boat did very well continuously operating for several weeks at our model boat events. And it offers fantastic sailing characteristics. We took the TP52 version „Quantum“ on a holiday in 2011 and was subject to heavy stress in the sea water: no failures.
3. VO60/Seawind: This model boat has a great style, there are events all over the world with numerous boats racing against each other. Unfortunately the Seawind tends to dip under going downwind, and this is not improving with the even bigger sails of the VO60. It is a bit hard to get the Seawind really waterproof, but a bit of water in the model boat won't do much harm. The costs for this model are similar to the 3x1.
4. The most perfected boat definitely is the 3x1. Easy to transport, safe and very fast. And it has been intensely tested. It is currently my favourite. And many others seem to like that sailing boat model, the demand is great for the short introduction time.
Lets get to the other models:
The Micro Magic is a popular model, that sails surprisingly well. But normally you can only get it as a modular kit. I do not like the looks, it's not really pretty.
Open 60: Extremely cool when the wind is blowing, moderate in light winds. But in strong winds and waves, the boat model's sailing characteristics are just incredible.
The IRC88 also sails great, we sailed it a lot on our holiday in the sea water. Very reliable. But unfortunately many parts corrode. But you gotta make concessions for that incredible price. I'm afraid, that the boat is currently hard to get.
The ACC110 is classy, with many pretty details and ultra-fast going upwind. A real America's Cupper for lovers. A fantastic site on every lake.
VO70 - Volvo Open 70. The canting keel is great fun. But you need a bit of practice to be able to sail fast with it. The model boat is very well-engineered, but not really a bargain because of the top-quality technology. Something for real VOLVO OCEAN RACE fans: You can imitate the surfs in the Southern Ocean on your local lake. I just love to sail that boat with the canting keel. It's very easy to sail with the fixed keel and can be handled in all sorts of wind.
We have never sold the Supermaxi up to now. I/We have learnt a lot about model boats with the Supermaxi. When we find the time, we will continue the development of that racing machine. It is a fascinating boat to sail, but needs a lot of care and it is hard to transport. We are fortunate to have a huge bus. If we ever get an order for the maxi model boat, we will rework the racer – profiting from our experience of the last 4 years. By the way: Without this model, the VO70 would have never been developed.
The only own development of a motor boat model, the BV110 – based on an order by Blohm+Voss – guarantees great fun. The model yacht accelerates like a rocket. Of course, there are much faster model motor boats and great scale models. But there is probably no motor boat model to attract more attention than this one. And that's what it has been built for: attract attention at Superyacht boat shows worldwide.“
